What is Scholastic Bowl?
Scholastic Bowl is an IESA competitive game in which teams answer questions based on multiple categories to gain points. The setup is similar to a trivia game show. A moderator asks questions and teams buzz in to answer. When a question is answered correctly, players then are given a bonus round to answer more questions by conferring with their teammates.
Five team members play together at one time against five team members from another school. More team members are on the bench ready to be substituted in for game play. Teams are comprised of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students from Junior High and Middle Schools throughout Illinois. The season officially opens at the end of January and concludes with Conference, Regional, Sectional, and State tournaments in April and May.
Scholastic Bowl is very competitive. Students will be challenged in the general areas of science, math, social studies, language arts, and fine arts. A miscellaneous category is also included with questions from a variety of sources including sports and popular music. All in all, a match includes 24 toss-up questions and 20 bonus questions.
